The Center for Young Children is a full day lab preschool and kindergarten program for children ages 3 – 6 whose parents are students, staff or faculty. The CYC received funding to “green” the center including replacing paper towel dispensers and installing new low flow faucets. Reducing water and waste, and increasing reuse and recycling are the Center’s first year goals. In the future, education and outreach materials, including videos and website, will be developed to chronicle their “green school journey.”
The Office of Sustainability met with staff from the CYC and provided them with suggestions on how to grow into a green school. Since that time, the school has implemented many green initiatives that will be featured on the CYC website. Besides updating dispensers and faucets, staff and children are composting their food leftovers and making art projects from recycled materials. It is hoped that, in the future, videos will be used to present at local schools and at conferences on the Center’s green school journey. In addition, the Center will develop electronic tip sheets for parents and teachers on reducing their environmental footprint and an interactive website for young children on recycling.
