Fall 2009 Sustainability Speaker Series

The Sustainability Speaker Series strives to engage the campus community in conversation about broad issues of sustainability. The Office of Sustainability is delighted to cosponsor this semester of the Speaker Series with the Student Government Association Sustainability Committee. We thank the student body representatives for their continuous support in developing a green university and seeking new opportunities to enhance sustainability education.

Fall 2009 Schedule:

  • 9/24 (Thur)- Overview of Campus Sustainability

    Our campus has made great progress in the past year toward its goal of becoming a national leader in sustainability and a model green university. In this first session of this semester`s Sustainability Speaker Series, the staff of the Office of Sustainability will provide an overview of the infrastructural improvements, policies, programs, and people that are making this campus more sustainable and will give a sneak preview of the exciting topics that will be presented during the other sessions this semester.

  • 10/1 (Thur)- Campus Energy 101

    Noon-1:00pm, Atrium, Stamp Student Union

    Come meet the Campus Energy Manager, Joan Kowal, and learn about how the campus produces and sources the energy needed to run our "city" of 46,000 people. Learn how the tri-generation power plant produces electricity, steam, and chilled water and ask your questions about future renewable energy prospects for the campus.

  • 10/21 (Wed)- State of the (Green) Union

    The Adele H. Stamp Student Union has implemented numerous green features throughout the building, including two new green roofs, water conserving bathroom fixtures, eco-friendly carpeting, and green cleaning practices. Join us on a walking tour of the Union with Associate Director, Steve Gnadt, to see the features yourself! Steve will do an short presentation in the Pyon Su room starting at noon before he takes the group on a tour of the green features of the Union.

  • 11/11- Campus Recycling 101

    The University has an impressive waste diversion track record, diverting nearly half of its waste from landfills. In 2009, the campus expanded its recycling program to include virtually all plastics. Come meet Recycling Coordinator, Bill Guididas, and Associate Director for Building and Landscape Services, Sandy Dykes. The session will cover where our waste goes (trash, recycling, and compost) and how we can move our campus toward a waste diversion rate of 75% by 2013 (as outlined in the 2009 UM Climate Action Plan). Bring your questions and ideas!
