UMD Recycling Internship Opportunity: Spring 2012

Description: Two Recycling Interns are needed to help set up new recycling and trash bins across the University of Maryland campus. Facilities Management is replacing all the cardboard trash and recycling bins.  Interns are needed to assist with the distribution of these bins, install signage above the new bins, and record their placement.  The expected outcome of the program is improve the basic recycling and trash collection, which will help meet the University’s goal of increasing the campus recycling rate to 75% by 2013.
The duties of the interns will be tosurvey buildings to determine appropriate trash/recycling bin placement, mark building floor plans, and install signs above the new trash/recycling bins.  Physical distribution of the bins will be supported by housekeeping. Program guidance and direction will be provided by Campus Recycling Specialist.
The Recycling Intern will work up to 10 hours per week during the Spring 2012 semester (12 weeks).


Stipend: $8.50 per hour for up to 120 hours.


Qualifications: The Recycling Interns must be comfortable talking with faculty and staff about the benefits of recycling and should have a warm and inviting personality. The interns must be able to use the computer program Adobe Illustrator and have the ability to read and interpret building floor plans.  Attention to detail is required.


Prerequisites: Intern must be a current University of Maryland graduate or undergraduate student with at least sophomore standing. A minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA is recommended. Intern is expected to have a strong interest in sustainability, a professional work ethic, and a desire to make the campus more sustainable. In addition, the intern must be disciplined and self-motivated as he/she will take the lead on this project. Students in all majors are encouraged to apply.


Internship Credit: Academic credit is available for internships. Students must talk with their academic advisor to see if internship credit is available through their academic department for this internship. If credit is not available through the student’s home department, internship credit may be available through other departments. Students must satisfy the specific internship requirements of the supporting academic department to earn credit, which typically involve 120 hours of work and a significant writing assignment, in addition to an Activities Log and a Letter of Evaluation from the on-site supervisor. Students are responsible for covering the tuition-related implications of accepting the internship. Facilities Management cannot pay for course credits.
