Smart Growth: Making Sustainable Settlements and Places
Ralph Bennett is a Principal of Bennett Frank McCarthy Architects, of Silver Spring, Maryland. The firm specializes in residential architecture from single family homes and multi-family housing to master planning and urban design. The firm's work has won a number local and national design awards and competitions. Bennett signed the Charter for the Congress for the New Urbanism; he is a LEED Accredited Professional with specialization in Building Design and Construction. He is a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects. Bennett is Professor Emeritus in the School of Architecture Planning and Preservation at the University of Maryland where he taught in the design studio program for 31 years. He has taught courses in drawing, theory, housing and, currently, 2 courses in sustainability. Bennett is a former Commissioner and Chair of the Montgomery County Housing Opportunities Commission where he served for 13 years and he is a former President of the Potomac Valley Chapter of the American Institute of Architects. He is Vice-Chair of the Affordable Housing Conference of Montgomery County and is President of Purple Line NOW, an advocacy group for light rail between Bethesda and New Carrollton, now under construction.Sustainable Tuesdays Lecture Series: Sustainability and the University of Maryland, College Park
