A fun outdoor festival with over 30 interactive exhibits from student groups and campus departments and beyond. There will be upcycling crafts, a free clothing swap, live music, activities and prizes, food and more!

Bike Week 2022

April 4-10 

The University of Maryland Department of Transportation Services (DOTS) and University Recreation and Wellness (RecWell) have partnered to host seven days of cycling fun during this year’s UMD Bike Week, April 4 to April 10. Bike Week is an annual event that highlights cycling programs on and around campus, builds community among university cyclists, and encourages biking as a means for commuting sustainably. “As warmer weather arrives, we invite the campus community to come outside and join us for our annual Bike Week celebration! The week is jam-packed with opportunities to dust off your bike, pick up DIY maintenance & safety tips, and explore riding paths in the area,” says Marta Woldu, who manages the Sustainable Transportation program at the university.


Healthy Literacy: Healthy Home Green Cleaning Webinar

Wed, April 6, 11:30 am- 1:00 pm, Virtual

Come learn the health benefits of green household cleaning. Participants will receive cleaning products recipes and watch a demonstration of how to make these inexpensive, environmentally-friendly products at home! Registration required.

Arbor Day Tree Ceremony

Humbly acknowledging that schedules are committed and we have likely omitted many who should have a direct invitation, I invite you to pause for a moment in celebration of the 150th observance of Arbor Day, held in Maryland on the first Wednesday of April each year. Join us in person at the McKeldin Library Plaza, near Jimenez Hall, to dedicate this year's Arbor Day tree. Brief remarks will begin at 1:15pm with ceremonial photos at 1:30pm. No shoveling required this year given the forecast of rain before and after, but not during, our ceremony.

UMD Farmers Market

Wednesdays, April 6- May 11, 11am- 3pm, Tawes Plaza

Join fellow Terps at Tawes Plaza for the weekly Farmers Market on Wednesdays from 11 am - 3 pm during the spring season from April-May and fall season from August-November. The Farmers Market features producer-only local vendors from within 250 miles of College Park. Every farmer and producer selling at our market grows or makes what they sell themselves. Market Manager, Chef Larry Tumlin, offers a cooking demonstration (with free samples) at noon during each Market.

Walk with an Arborist

Did you know that the entire University of Maryland campus is an arboretum and botanical garden? Enjoy a morning walk around some of the highlights of our gardens and grounds with certified arborists Meg Smolinski and Scott Rupert! The route either begins at the east side of the Memorial Chapel, at the main steps OR at the sundial sculpture in the middle of McKeldin Mall. Both routes involve stairs, taking around 45-60 minutes. Bike Blended Smoothies

The Bike Blender is back by popular demand at the UMD Farmers Market. The faster you pedal on our special stationary bike, the creamier your smoothie is! All supplies provided, except the renewable energy—you’ll supply that with your pedal power. Look for us alongside the Green Terp table and help us support sustainability on campus.

Decorate Your Bike Helmet

Five Senses Hike

Did you know that our entire campus is a world-class arboretum with gardens and natural wooded areas? Join interns from the Integrated Life Sciences Honors Program on an intentional hike of the Wooded Hillock. This hike will utilize the five sense to encourage being present in the moment in addition to a low impact cardio workout. The trailhead is located across the street from the northwest corner of Terrapin Trail Garage. Mountain Bike & Camp: Pocahontas State Park, Chesterfield, VA

Sat, April 9 - Sun, April 10, Pocahontas State Park, Chesterfield, VA

Spend an exhilarating weekend mountain biking the singletrack trails of Central Virginia’s Pocahontas State Park. Located just outside of Richmond, Pocahontas State Park is home to over 64 miles of trail and over 25 miles are dedicated to directional mountain biking. After a day of biking, you’ll be able to relax around the campfire and rest up for another day of exploring the park by bike. Amenities: Indoor restroom and shower facilities available. Travel Time: Approximately 3 hours away. Pre-Trip Meeting: Tuesday, April 5 from 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Must be fully vaccinated to participate. Registration Required, Cost: $50

BikeUMD/SOA Riverside Clean-up

Join us for a first! BikeUMD is teaming with UMD’s Sustainable Ocean Alliance club to go on a bike trip to the Indian Creek riverbank in a hunt for plastic litter. Did you know that 80 percent of plastic waste gets to the oceans via small rivers? Come join us for a fun bike ride (slow with lots of stops, 5 miles max) with a purpose! All supplies furnished, snacks too. Registration Required.

World Of Change Concert

Pianist Lara Downes, percussionist Britton-René Collins and composer and multi-instrumentalist Clarice Assad present World of Change, a concert considering the changing climate and the acceleration of our device-intensive existence. In this musical exploration, the performers take a step back from political and international turmoil to consider the wider landscape of our world and to pose self-reflective questions about how we interact with it.

UMD Honey Sale

Tues, April 19 & Thurs, April 21 

UMD Honey Sale to raise funds for supporting UMD Bee Lab research and extension services. Their honey is produced from research colonies located on campus and at several Maryland farms. More than 150 colonies are utilized each year for honey bee health, epidemiological and best management research to inform both local and national beekeeping practices. Some of these apiaries are used specifically for extension and teaching, capitalizing on our expertise to share and engage with the strong community of Maryland beekeepers.

Sustainability Fund Grant Workshop

Mon, April 25, 6-8 pm, Innovation Loft- ESJ 2101

This in-person workshop is for students interested in applying for a Sustainability Fund grant. During the workshop, you will brainstorm and troubleshoot your grant proposal ideas to advance campus sustainability.

This workshop will provide an opportunity to identify proposal topics, brainstorm ideas, learn and utilize the steps of Design Thinking, connect with potential grant collaborators, and devise an action plan for developing a strong Sustainability Fund grant application prior to the deadline. This interactive session is designed for students who wish to create proposals to meet one another as well as the students and staff reviewing and awarding Sustainability Fund grant proposals. Students at all phases of the grant writing process are welcome to attend, though we recommend considering topics of interest ahead of time.

Registration is required and limited to the first 40 students who register, you will be notified by email if you are on the waiting list. Please register here by Wednesday, April 20
