Before You Begin

There are a few considerations in bringing the Green Office Program to your office in order to archive certification. Your efforts will have the greatest success when you have the support of your coworkers and management. Take the time to talk to everyone in your office about participating in the program. Questions to ask at a staff meeting or other gathering include:

  • What does participating in the Green Office Program mean for our office?
  • What are some of the challenges we may face in becoming more sustainable?
  • How can we overcome those challenges?
  • Why is taking action important to you/us?

Record the answers to these and other questions you may have. As you begin implementation, you can reference these ideas and thoughts to encourage progress and overcome barriers.

Gather support at all levels of your organization to help you accomplish the changes and improvements outlined in the Green Office checklists. Support that could be helpful may include:

  • A statement on the importance of participating from individuals in your unit.
  • A team leader (your future GO Rep) assigned or volunteered to the program.
  • A senior level project champion.
  • Purchasing, IT, and administrative support.

Obtaining the support of your directors/department heads/deans will demonstrate a commitment to the initiative and will be a useful reference for getting cooperation, support and participation throughout your office.
