Green Roof Research

Department of Plant Science

Plant Science graduate students set up two green roof research locations, one at the University of Maryland Research Greenhouse in March 2012 and one on the roof of the Plant Sciences Building in Spring 2013. Between the two locations, a total of 390 green roof modules were built. Over 2 million data points were collected during the 2012-2013 year. Some of the research involved temperature insulation of green roofs, moisture holding abilities of green roofs, what local and recycled materials can be used to create a green roof substrate, and the use of native plant species in commercial green roofs. The project supported two graduate student researchers, and the Greenhouse modules will be moved to the Plant Sciences Building roof, where all the modules will be used for ongoing research and undergraduate education.
