Intercollegiate Athletics, Facilities Management and Dining Services
“Drive to Zero Waste,” an Intercollegiate Athletics (ICA) and Facilities Management (FM) program, was launched in the fall of 2014. The goal of this ongoing project is to achieve “zero waste” at all athletics facilities within three years, meaning that at least 90% of solid waste will be diverted from landfills and sent to be recycled or composted instead.
The grant was used to purchase 22 sort stations. These stations consist of 45 gallon compost and recycling bins and a 22 gallon landfill bin. Additional funds were spent on compostable bags, hauling compost, staffing sorting stations and parking lots, uniforms, in-game sorting, signage, and marketing.
The first year of the program focused on the 6 home games of the 2014 football season at Byrd Stadium. Waste diversion rates were measured at each game to track changes over the season. Initially, Byrd Stadium saw an initial diversion rate of 34.4%. With continued efforts throughout the season, however, the stadium ultimately achieved a maximum diversion rate of 49.5%, with an overall average diversion rate of 39.2%.
In the future, the ICA and FM plan to construct a compactor and sorting area outside of the stadium where all waste will be directed and sorted. New equipment will also be purchased to capture additional recycling from alcohol sales, increase education through technology and signage, and conduct surveys to see where improvements could be made. The program will also expand in 2015 to include the men’s and women’s basketball games at the Xfinity Center.
