Sustainability at the University of Maryland

The University of Maryland is committed to advance sustainability through the ways we impact the world: teaching, research, service, and operations.

About SustainableUMD

Our global fight against the climate crisis is far from over. The University of Maryland will accelerate its goal to become a net carbon-neutral campus by 2025. It is my hope that these measures will help inspire every one of us to commit to the reduction of our greenhouse gas emissions for our planet and for our people.

SustainableUMD News & Events

Improvements to global power transmission & distribution could cut emissions

The Center for Global Sustainability (UMD) at the University of Maryland and the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), launched new research in Nature Climate Change quantifying potential opportunities for emissions reductions from improvements to global power transmission and distribution.

Healthy Food, Healthy Environment

Dining Services has expanded its menu of eco-friendly actions in hopes of providing students with a more sustainably satisfying experience.   The Anytime Dining Program launched in Fall 2016 gives residents on meal plans unlimited access to the three dining halls—they can enter as often and eat as much there as they like on reusable dishes (and no single-use, disposable products).

UMD to Accelerate Carbon Neutrality Goal to 2025

We are pleased to share this Maryland Today article about UMD’s new carbon neutrality goal. The Office of Sustainability researched options for achieving carbon neutrality, including transitioning to an all-electric fleet, and will work with campus partners to update the Climate Action Plan to reflect UMD’s new goal of net-zero carbon emissions by 2025.
