The University of Maryland, in partnership with WGL Energy and the Maryland Energy Administration, recently completed the installation of three solar panel canopies at the Regents Drive, Terrapin Trail, and Mowatt Lane parking garages.

The Maryland Sustainability Engineers (MDSE) have completed their retrofit project of a stormwater management system at Wellness Way after receiving a grant of $25,325 from the University Sustainability Fund.

 One of the newest additions to the University of Maryland campus, the state-of-the-art Edward St. John Teaching and Learning Center (ESJ) is not only a marvel of modern technology and design, but it’s also the university’s newest green building.  

Members of the University of Maryland campus community may have noticed something different about campus recently, in addition to all the new building construction. The Office of Solid Waste and Recycling in Facilities Management has been diligently working for the past two years to expand campus compost collection and the fruits of their efforts are in full bloom.

  This May, the Department of Resident Life completed their 6th annual Trash to Treasure campaign. The program provides University of Maryland students the opportunity to donate unwanted, gently used items to Goodwill during spring move out. During this year’s efforts, a total of 11,520 pounds of goods were collected for donation.

The University of Maryland Fraternity and Sorority Life community once again held their annual Spring Fest Dumpster Painting Competition.    Congratulations to the first place winners from Alpha Delta Phi and Alpha Delta Pi.     Second place honors went to Alpha Tau Omega and Gamma Phi Beta.

The Sustainability Fund Review Committee and the University Sustainability Council are proud to announce the following 2017 Sustainability Fund projects. The Fund provides grants for students, faculty and staff to implement projects that will improve sustainability on campus or involve students in the implementation of projects in the local community.    Read More

McKeldin Library will be welcoming some new workers to the University Libraries this spring - WORMS! A few environmentally-minded librarians and students from the Institute for Applied Agriculture (and some campus community gardening enthusiasts) will be building a worm composting (vermicomposting) display in the lobby of McKeldin Library on Thursday, April 20. Once installed, the worms in the composting structure will create nutrient rich castings (a component of soil) from food scraps and paper towels collected in McKeldin.
